CPC Driver Training Bottleneck for Haulage Industry in 2013?

Driver CPC was introduced in 2008 for bus and coach drivers and in 2009 for the haulage industry. Since then, over 420,000 drivers have started their training. But time is running out for those drivers that haven’t yet undertaken the training.

Driver CPC Training is mandatory and all professional bus, coach and lorry drivers must complete 35 hours’ training every five years to get qualified and stay qualified. The deadline for the bus and coach drivers to complete their first 35 hours of training is September 2013. Haulage drivers have until September 2014.

cpc trainingWaiting until the deadline is nearer brings no advantage – drivers will be covered by their training for five years from the deadline date, not the training date. By waiting until the deadline is nearer, drivers are in fact putting their qualification at risk a bottleneck of thousands of drivers needing training in the space of a year will result if the demand for CPC Driver Training outstrips the supply.

A number of concerned industry bodies are recommendating that organisations should focus on the benefits of what Driver CPC can do for their business and set up a training plan now to avoid having to remove drivers from the road if the deadline is missed.

The CPC Training can then be tailored to address some of your largest costs and threats relevant to that particular organisation since the benefits are considerable.

Driver awareness training will lead to less wear and tear on vehicles and fewer accidents. You can organise training courses to reduce the chance of collisions or loads falling from trucks , or look at driving techniques to reduce fuel consumption, which could have significant paybacks for business.

There are also a range of specialist modules that can be combined with CPC Training. For example undertaking an ADR Training (Dangerous Goods course can contribute 21 hours of the 35 hours required to complete the CPC Training. Also with the growth of Boris Bikes cyclists on London’s streets bike safety is now gaining greater aware and Lorry drivers in London will now have the option to add a cyclist awareness course to their CPC training for free partly funded by Transport For London.

Dangerous Goods Classes

We all know that substances such as acids and alkalis or articles such as a stick of dynamite, radioactive transport are dangerous; however, it may not occur to us why a substance like paint or ink may be dangerous.

From the point of view of moving or shipping these items around the world safely it is essential that these dangers are recognized and understood. To overcome this, the United Nations decided to categorize dangerous goods according to their major danger and identified nine classes.

 

 The Nine Dangerous Goods Classes :

 

  1. 1.       Explosive Substances and Articles
  2. 2.       Gases
  3. 3.       Flammable Liquids
  4. 4.       Flammable Solids                                                            
  5. 5.       Oxidizing Substances
  6. 6.       Toxic or Infectious Substances
  7. 7.       Radioactive Material
  8. 8.       Corrosive Substances
  9. 9.       Miscellaneous Substances and Articles

 

Class 1 – Explosive Substances and Articles

 

These are substances, that when initiated, undergo rapid expansion producing light, heat, sound and pressure. TNT, Dynamite, Fireworks, Bullets, Grenades and Flares all fall into this class.

 

Class 2 – Gases

 

This class sub-divides into the following:

2.1 Flammable Gases

2.2 Non-Toxic, Non-Flammable Gases

2.3 Toxic Gases

 

Since gases are carried under pressure for the purposes of transport in order to reduce their volume, this in itself presents a danger. Pressurized articles can cause significant damage should the method of containment be compromised. If the contents are flammable and or toxic as well, the danger is increased dramatically.

 

Class 3 – Flammable Liquids

By far the largest class in terms of tonnage moved throughout the world, it includes many familiar everyday items such as paint, ink, alcohol, adhesives, petrol and diesel.  The term flammable liquid is self-explanatory but can be a little misleading in that these are liquids that give of vapour that is readily combustible.

 

 Class 4 – Flammable Solids

This class sub-divides into the following:

4.1 Flammable Solids – These are solids that are flammable. Firelighters for example (naphthalene) are found in this class.

4.2 Spontaneously combustible substances – will catch fire if they come into contact with air.

4.3 Dangerous when wet substances – will catch fire if they come into contact with water or even moisture in the air.

 

Class 5 – Oxidizing Substances

This sub-divides into the following:

5.1 Oxidizing Substances – These contain high levels of oxygen and will support a fire even without the presence of air.

5.2 Organic Peroxides – Unstable man-made substances with high levels of oxygen. Usually subject to temperature control.

 

Class 6 – Toxic and Infectious Substances

This sub-divides into the following:

6.1 Toxic Substances – Poisons that can cause short or long-term harm or even death if they enter the body.

6.2 Infectious substances – Living organisms that can cause disease and death if they enter the body or the atmosphere.

 

 Class 7 – Radioactive Material

Material said to be radioactive is essentially unstable and contains more particles than it should. It therefore breaks down or decays structurally by emitting particles or waves in the form of radiation. This radiation can in turn affect other material.

 

 Class 8 – Corrosive Substances

Will chemically break down or corrode other materials such as concrete, metals, wood, rubber and human tissue! Acids and alkalis are examples of this.

 

 Class 9 – Miscellaneous Substances and Articles

Items in this class do not readily fit the criteria of other classes but do exhibit some traits or are dangerous for other reasons. The dangers can vary dramatically.

Class 1 Explosive ADR Training

To legally carry them on a commercial basis over certain thresholds, a driver will need an ADR training certificate displaying Class 1. At Connection Couriers Specialist Services we have been providing Class 1 Explosive training for several years. Our training expertise stems from our years of operational experience in carrying explosives for a variety of customers.

Like the Class 7 Radioactive module, the Class 1 ADR Explosives module is a specialized one-day course which is covered in more detail than the other hazard classes. There are significant and obvious reasons for this due to the very nature of explosives themselves and the levels of damage that can be caused should they be initiated. Our hands-on operational knowledge complements our informative course and above all provides you with the skills to transport explosives safely and securely.

Whether you are an existing ADR-trained driver looking to add Class 1 Explosives to your licence via a one-day course or an un-trained driver starting from scratch with ADR Core and Class 1, we can help you.

Class 7 ADR Driver Training

If you are an existing ADR driver looking to increase your potential by adding Class 7, this can be done via a one day module. Or, if you are doing your ADR from scratch but only wish to carry Class 7 Radioactive Material, you can take the ADR training Core module and the Class 7 Module over two and a half days.

As an independent training provider we have been delivering ADR Class 7 training for several years, however, our specialist operational division has been transporting radioactive material since its inception. It is this hands-on operational experience that further enhances our course delivery and ensures it is drawn from actual experience of moving radioactive material.

The Class 7 Radioactive module is a more in-depth specialized one-day module compared to other hazard classes. Here you will learn the basic principles behind radioactivity, but most essentially how to handle and transport radioactive material safely and securely.
